Shanghai: 8 Day, Market & Culture Experience

8 Days

Shanghai is a colossal and dynamic megacity on China’s central coast, renowned as a global financial hub and a captivating blend of East and West. It’s often seen as a symbol of modern China’s rapid ascent.

The city is perhaps best known for The Bund, a waterfront promenade lined with historic colonial-era buildings on one side and facing the dazzling, futuristic skyline of Pudong on the other. This iconic juxtaposition perfectly encapsulates Shanghai’s unique character.

Tips for your Shanghai Trip:

Booking: For popular shows (acrobatics) or museums (Shanghai Museum), booking in advance is advisable, especially during peak season.

Transportation: Shanghai has an excellent and extensive metro system, which is the easiest way to get around. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Didi is prevalent) are also readily available.

Mobile Payments: China is largely cashless. WeChat Pay and Alipay are dominant. It’s highly recommended to set these up (linking to your international credit card) as cash may not be accepted in many places.

Language: Mandarin is the primary language. While some English is spoken in major tourist areas, having a translation app (like Google Translate with offline download) will be very helpful.

Bargaining: Essential at most markets (e.g., fabric, antique, tourist markets). Start by offering a third to half of the asking price.

Food: Be adventurous! Shanghai cuisine is generally lighter and sweeter than other Chinese cuisines, but you’ll find a vast array of regional dishes.

VPN: Many Western apps (Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) are blocked in China. A VPN is essential if you want to access these.
